Raheem Sterling has been excluded from Chelsea’s squad for their Europa Conference League play-off first leg against Servette. This Thursday’s match marks the second consecutive game that the 29-year-old England forward has not been included in the matchday squad, having also missed Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Manchester City.
In addition to Sterling, defenders Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo were also absent from Chelsea’s A-list submitted to UEFA for the match at Stamford Bridge, scheduled for 20:00 BST. The second leg will take place in Switzerland on August 29.
If Chelsea advances in the tournament, they may include Sterling in their squad for the group stage of the Europa Conference League. Prior to Chelsea’s defeat to City on Sunday, Sterling’s representatives released a statement expressing a desire for “clarity” regarding the player’s future at the club.
Chelsea has invested approximately £185 million in 11 new signings this summer, resulting in a bloated squad of over 40 senior players. Manager Enzo Maresca stated after the City match that he “wants” Sterling to remain at Chelsea but also noted that “there is not enough space” for all players to participate in matches.
Since arriving from Manchester City for £50 million in July 2022, Sterling has made 81 appearances for Chelsea.
