A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles) and was centered near Port Vila, Vanuatu’s largest city.
It remains unclear whether the earthquake caused any damage.
Shortly after the initial quake, a magnitude 5.5 aftershock was registered in the same vicinity.
In the aftermath, Vanuatu government websites were temporarily offline. The USGS issued a warning for tsunami waves affecting some coastal areas of Vanuatu, an archipelago of 80 islands home to approximately 330,000 residents.
