Mohamed Salah has stated that this season will be his “last year” at Liverpool, revealing that no discussions about a new contract have taken place.
The 32-year-old forward, whose contract at Anfield expires next summer, scored in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 victory at Manchester United on Sunday. After the match, Salah mentioned that he approached the game with the mindset that it could be his last appearance at Old Trafford.
“I was coming to the game thinking, ‘this could be the last time,’” he told Sky Sports. “Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts, so I’m treating it as my last season and will see what happens at the end.”
When asked about Salah’s comments, manager Arne Slot responded carefully, saying, “It’s a lot of ‘if.’ Right now, he is one of ours, and I’m really happy with how he performed today. I don’t discuss contracts, but I can talk for hours about how well Mo played.”
Salah signed a new three-year deal in July 2022, reportedly making him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history with a salary exceeding £350,000 per week. Last September, Liverpool rejected a £150 million offer from Al-Ittihad for Salah.
Salah’s Impressive Record at Old Trafford
In the match against Manchester United, Salah continued to make history. He has now scored in each of Liverpool’s opening three games this season and has been involved in 17 of the last 23 Premier League goals that Liverpool has scored against United, either by scoring (11) or assisting (6).
Salah has netted 10 goals in nine appearances for Liverpool at Old Trafford across all competitions, becoming only the second player to achieve this feat at a single away ground for Premier League clubs since 1992-93, following Alan Shearer. Furthermore, he is the first player to score in five consecutive away games against Manchester United in the Premier League.
Following their victory, Liverpool sits second in the league table, trailing only Manchester City on goal difference.
“A great result,” Salah commented. “Everyone knows the derby is important for the fans and the city. We need to continue winning to compete for the league. I’m happy to be involved in three goals today. The manager wants us to press high, and we capitalized on their mistakes—it was part of the plan.”
He added, “With Jurgen, we’ve always focused on pressing high to regain possession, a strategy that hasn’t changed in seven years.”
