The Department of Rail Transport said that on May 4 and 5, about 2 million people traveled by train.

King Rama X was crowned on Thursday, and Friday was a holiday in honor of the occasion.

Pichet Kunadhamraks, director-general of the department, reported that throughout the two days, passenger traffic increased by more than 2.5%.

Over the course of two days, he claimed, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) transported 122,873 passengers.

There were 46,755 passengers on the SRT’s Southern route, followed by 30,372 on the Northeast, 21,204 on the North, and 15,929 on the East lines. According to Pichet, 8,613 additional persons used the Mahachai-Maeklong route.

During the two-day holiday, 1,779,354 passengers traveled by train in Bangkok, according to Pichet.

On the two days, there were 1,111,619 passengers using the Bangkok Mass Transit System, followed by 542,609 using the Metropolitan Rapid Transit system, and 97,535 using the Airport Rail Link.

On Friday, there were two minor collisions reported: one on the Airport Rail Link and the other on the SRT’s Northeast line.

At Bang Pa-in station in Ayutthaya, a man was struck by a train and sustained a fractured arm.

A train’s brakes failed as it approached the Lat Krabang station of the Airport Rail Link, but they were promptly fixed, he added. The train then continued its regular operations.

According to Pichet, the Department of Rail Transport seeks to reassure the public that traveling by train is secure. He said that sniffer dogs check passengers’ baggage and that all drivers submit to alcohol tests.
