Police raid nets  Meth pills, crystal meth in record drug bust

A joint task team of Thai military and law enforcement authorities recovered almost 1.2 million meth pills, with a new recipe adding cannabis, from a transit point along the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom yesterday. Some of this haul came in sophisticated dehumidifying packaging with one-of-a-kind stamps. According to sources, the medications were intended for the entertainment industry.

Yesterday, a team of law enforcement officers led by Rear Admiral Kasidi Klinsrisuk, commander of Nakhon Phanom’s Mekong Peacekeeping Naval Area, reviewed the narcotics stash discovered by Lieutenant Thanapong Sudrak, Head of Tha Uthen Navy Station, and other senior authorities. 120 bundled bundles totaling more than three bags were discovered in conjunction with the Surasak Montri Task Force.

Forty of these shipments contained a new methamphetamine compound encased in dehumidifying plastic containers emblazoned with a marijuana leaf and branded with the English words DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY.
This product, which was not seen in past seizures, consists of orange pills with the character WY stamped on them. Authorities believe these cannabis-infused pills were destined for recreational use, namely at entertainment venues and among younger audiences. They estimate the entire number of meth pills to be 400,000, with a street price of 150 to 200 baht (US$4 to US$6) each pill. According to Sanook, additional analysis and investigations are being conducted to track the manufacturing origins and determine the preliminary materials used.

Authorities also uncovered a second sort of meth pill hidden in 80 more bundles, each bearing a crown and the number 999 in blue. These Grade-A orange tablets, which were similarly imprinted with WY, were expected to fetch a comparable street price. These pills, believed to be designed for clientele seeking a high-end recreational experience, have a combined value of no less than 100 million baht when combined with the first batch. A motorcycle found at the crime scene was also seized.

The operation was launched when the Nakhon Phanom Peacekeeping Naval Area got information from a neighboring country about a clandestine drug smuggling operation that was taking advantage of the heavy and continuous precipitation.
The drugs were discovered in Naam Kham New Development Village, Naam Kham Subdistrict, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province, stashed along the banks of the Mekong River. Despite the fact that the wrongdoers had fled the scene prior to their arrival, law enforcement is certain in their identities and is actively pursuing legal action.

The increased activity of networked local groups has resulted in increased attempts to combat cross-border smuggling and the introduction of new kinds of meth into the Thai market.
