A man’s body has been found in the early hours of yesterday morning in a suspected murder.
The man, believed to be aged around 50, appeared to have head injuries when he was discovered unresponsive in Tower Hamlets Cemetery.
Paramedics declared him dead at around 1am today and a post-mortem is taking place while efforts are made to trace his family.
DCI Claire Hine said: ‘The discovery of a body in these circumstances will understandably cause concern in the local community.
‘I would like to reassure them that an investigation is already under way, led by specialist homicide detectives.
‘We are determined to find out what happened and to identify the person or people responsible.
‘At this early stage, we are keeping an open mind as to what has caused this fatal head injury.’
She urged anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in the area to come forward with information.
The cemetery, which is also a nature reserve, was closed on Monday upon the request of police, according to Friends of Tower Hamlet Cemetery Park. ‘
Superintendent Daniel Rutland said: ‘Local officers will also be in and around the area in the coming days.
‘If you have concerns or have information that could assist this investigation then please speak to one of these officers or call police.’
