Manchester City emerged victorious in the Community Shield, defeating Manchester United 7-6 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw at Wembley.
The match featured a dramatic finish, as United substitute Alejandro Garnacho’s 82nd-minute goal seemed to secure victory for his side. Garnacho seized a pass from Bruno Fernandes, cut inside from the right, and delivered a clinical finish that left City goalkeeper Ederson with no chance.
However, City equalized in the dying moments of regular time. Bernardo Silva, another substitute, powered a header past Andre Onana from an impressive cross by Oscar Bobb, leveling the score at 1-1 just before the full-time whistle.
Earlier in the match, a tightly-contested game saw James McAtee strike the post while United came close to scoring a brilliant team goal when Amad Diallo’s cross narrowly missed Fernandes. Despite United creating more chances, including a strike from Marcus Rashford that hit the woodwork, it was City who held their composure when it mattered most.
In the penalty shoot-out, Manuel Akanji scored the decisive spot-kick after Jonny Evans’ effort sailed over the bar. City’s triumph allowed them to avoid a second consecutive loss at Wembley to the FA Cup winners.
Managerial Reactions
Following the match, City manager Pep Guardiola reflected on the performance, saying, “We could have lost today, but there were many things I liked. The first 35 minutes were excellent considering the limited time we’ve had together.” He praised young talents, remarking on McAtee and Bobb’s contributions, highlighting their confidence within the squad.
Guardiola also commented on the potential for Bobb to replicate Cole Palmer’s success, stating, “Oscar has the standards to be here. It depends on how much he plays, but I believe he can do great things.”
Discussing new signing Savinho, Guardiola noted, “He had a good impact from the bench. When playing on the left, I think he will help Erling score goals.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the penalty heartbreak, United can take encouragement from their performance, particularly with news of an agreement for Bayern Munich center-back Matthijs de Ligt shortly before kickoff. As the season kicks off, City will look to build on their success, while United aims to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
