Extra police assigned to market
Traffic police and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Thesakij law-enforcers were on the lookout for disturbances around the Seri Villa housing project in Prawet district on Friday morning, the scene of Sunday’s row over a parked pickup blocking a residential driveway.
A decade of tension between residents and businesspeople in the adjacent market came to a boil this week when two residents damaged a truck owned by a third woman who’d parked in front of their gate to shop in the illegal market. The incident was caught on video and widely shared online. On Friday, police were managing traffic flow and ensuring there were no blocked driveways or violations of the 5-10am and 4-8pm parking ban.
Thesakij officials were there to prevent anyone selling goods along the footpaths. Fewer people have been shopping at the neighbourhood markets this week, vendors said. Several shoppers surveyed said they were sorry that the markets, which they found convenient, would be closed by the end of this month, although they understood the need to uphold the law.
