The Criminal Court today (Wednesday) cleared anti-junta activist Aekachai Hongkangwan and four other defendants of using force to obstruct Her Majesty the Queen’s procession during an anti-government demonstration in 2020.
The court determined based on the evidence presented during the trial that the protesters did not commit the offense for which they were charged by the police and that the police had not informed them in advance that a Royal motorcade would pass by the road on which they were marching from the Democracy monument towards Government House.
The incident happened on October 14, 2020, the first day of protests against the government that the “Khana Ratsadon 2563” group had organized.
The court further determined that the defendants were unable to see the approaching Royal motorcade or what was going on on the other side of the road because of the large number of crowd control police and protesters on the route.
The five were accused of breaking Section 110 of the Criminal Code, a serious offense punishable by life in prison or a sentence of 16 to 20 years if found guilty, by allegedly using violence against the Queen’s liberty.
One of the defendants, “Boonkuanoon,” commented on the not guilty judgment, saying that they had finally received justice.
