Conor McGregor has asserted that he is the “only logical choice” for President of Ireland as Michael D. Higgins prepares to leave his role in 2025.
The MMA fighter shared his intentions on social media, outlining his plans if elected next year. On X, McGregor stated, “As President, I hold the power to summon the Dáil and dissolve it. I would ensure that those in power—who disrupt families and small businesses—are held accountable to the people of Ireland.”
He added, “These charlatans would be summoned to answer for their actions, or I would have no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely. The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek.”
McGregor highlighted his view that Ireland needs an active President who is fully dedicated to the people, declaring, “It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is approaching…”
This isn’t McGregor’s first mention of a presidential run; he signaled his intentions last year. He previously acknowledged potential competitors for the role—including Gerry Adams, Bertie Ahern, and Enda Kenny—although he miscalculated their ages: claiming Adams is 78 instead of 75, Ahern 75 instead of 72, and Kenny 74 instead of 72.
For McGregor to run for President, he must be nominated by either 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities. However, several political figures have indicated they would not support his bid. One senator remarked, “I wouldn’t even nominate him to wash the dishes,” while TD Thomas Pringle added, “I wouldn’t nominate him to lace my shoes.” Michael Healy-Rae also expressed his lack of support, stating, “Leave the politics to the politicians and the boxing to the boxers.”
