Craig Bellamy expressed immense pride after celebrating his inaugural victory as Wales manager in a challenging match against Montenegro, which he described as played in the “toughest conditions” he had ever faced.
Early goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson propelled Wales to a 2-1 Nations League victory in Niksic, where relentless rain rendered the pitch nearly unplayable, making it difficult for players to maintain their footing, let alone play football effectively.
Despite the adversities, Wales showed resilience, earning Bellamy his first win, complementing last Friday’s encouraging goalless draw with Turkey in his debut match.
“I’m extremely proud. I love this group, I really do,” Bellamy stated. “These are the toughest conditions I’ve ever been in. Nothing about this trip has been easy. There could have been plenty of excuses—changing venues, the travel, a sluggish bus driver, and the weather—but sometimes you learn from these experiences.”
He remarked, “There’s a reason this group has qualified for major tournaments. It wasn’t just a football match today; the conditions simply didn’t allow for it. I couldn’t even wear trainers here. My summer bomber jacket is ruined!”
Bellamy continued, “After five minutes, the pitch became torn up, turning it into a battle of wills. It was close at times; if it were a boxing match, there were two teams out on their feet, and we came out on top. You often take more pride in wins like this.”
Just two matches into his tenure, Bellamy has already revitalized Welsh football. Players have praised the new head coach, while fans erupted in cheers for him throughout the match in Niksic.
While the draw against Turkey showcased the exciting footballing potential of Bellamy’s team—both tactically and stylistically—the win over Montenegro highlighted the squad’s mental resilience and determination to secure a victory in testing conditions.
Originally scheduled to take place at the Podgorica National Stadium, the match was relocated to Niksic, 53km away, just two weeks before kick-off due to the unplayability of the pitch there.
The heavy rainfall on Monday severely cut up the pitch, creating a chaotic environment for both teams. However, despite a tense finish, Wales managed to fend off Montenegro’s attempts at a late equalizer, securing a vital three points.
“This camp has been incredible,” Bellamy reflected. “Last night, I felt excited about the game but also sad because it ends tomorrow. I’ll miss this squad; it’s been an outstanding 10 days.”
He concluded, “I couldn’t be prouder of them. I adore this group; they’re truly exceptional, and I’ve learned so much from them. Tonight was all heart.”
