Authorities Continue Crackdown on Cybercrimes in Poipet
A total of 119 Thai nationals were among 230 foreigners freed from a scam call centre in Poipet, Cambodia, as authorities intensify their efforts to combat cybercrimes. The operation, which took place on February 22 and 23, was carried out by the Cambodian National Police General Directorate at two locations in Poipet city, located in Banteay Meanchey province.
Details of the Operation
According to a statement from the Cambodian police, 123 individuals initially claimed to be Thai nationals, but upon verification, only 119 were confirmed to be from Thailand. The remaining detainees were from Myanmar and Laos.
The 119 Thais, consisting of 61 men and 58 women, admitted to entering Cambodia illegally, lured by the promise of high wages to work in online scams. They clarified that they were not deceived into joining the organization and were not held against their will. Importantly, none of the detainees sought assistance from the Thai or Cambodian governments.
Repatriation Plans
All the Thai nationals are set to be repatriated, and the investigation into the Chinese-operated call centres is ongoing. The raids followed a three-month investigation into the illegal activities taking place at these centres, highlighting the growing issue of cybercrimes in the region.
