Christmas lights land Russian tourist in Trouble

A Russian tourist was fined 500 baht on December 17 for decorating his car with colorful flashing lights in Pattaya. The incident occurred during an evening traffic inspection by Pol. Capt. Chayaphon Yoorod, Deputy Traffic Inspector at Pattaya Police Station.

While patrolling Sukhumvit Road toward Chaiyapruek Junction, the officer spotted a gray Toyota Vios with multicolored flashing lights around the vehicle. The car was pulled over for inspection, and the driver, identified as 25-year-old Russian national Mr. Ivanov, appeared confused when officers explained that such decorative lights violate Thai traffic laws.

The police issued a fine for “using vehicle equipment not compliant with regulations,” imposing a penalty of 500 baht. Mr. Ivanov explained that he decorated his car to celebrate the Christmas and New Year season, having seen similar decorations on vehicles in Bangkok and assuming it was allowed in Thailand.

Pattaya Police Station later issued a public reminder advising against the use of festive decorations, such as reindeer antlers or flashing lights, on vehicles. These modifications can confuse other drivers and obstruct important vehicle signals. Authorities emphasized that such practices are prohibited under the Vehicle Act B.E. 2522, Sections 12 and 60, which carry a maximum fine of 2,000 baht.

Police urged both residents and tourists to adhere to traffic laws to ensure safety during the holiday season.
