A whopping 22 percent of blokes admit to not changing their undies every day – and before you ladies feel too smug, women didn’t fare much better with 18 percent confessing to re-wearing their knickers.
Shockingly, one in 20 fellas admitted to re-wearing their bills more than five times before washing them – for women this figure is seven percent.
The study, by OnBuy, surveyed 2,790 men and women to find out about their hygiene habits and the results make for interesting reading.
Of those who admitted to not changing their underwear each day, 76 percent of men and 69 percent of women said they turn them inside out for a ‘cleaner feel’.
The survey also found that 13 percent of men and four percent of women keep hold of their old underpants for more than three years to try and get their money’s worth, while 40 percent of men and 55 percent of women replace them yearly.
When it comes to home regularly you should be washing your pants, Ivan Ivanov from EOT Cleaning, recommends: “To upkeep personal hygiene, the majority of items in your wardrobe should be washed after each wear; especially if exercise, strenuous activity or hot weather was involved.”
Ivan also recommends using an antibacterial laundry sanitiser to kill of any germs and ensure you ae washing at the correct temperature to kill any nasties off – the best is between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius, but some antibacterial laundry sanitisers can work at lower temperatures.
Speaking to the Metro about the potential dangers of not changing your pants daily – and washing them between wears – Dr Nichola Cosgrove, skincare specialist at Natura Emporium explained: “Underwear in a way acts as a barrier to protect our clothes, as it’s easier to wash our underwear regularly then our clothes.
“By not changing your underwear every day you will start to have an accumulation of bacteria like Escherichia coli, staphylococcus, streptococcus and many others that are perfectly normal and useful when they remain at their required levels.
“However, because they thrive in a warm and humid environment, they will start to multiply out of control. The effects of these can be as simple as a bad odour, a rash, excess itching, to full on yeast infections, urinary tract infections and potentially life-threatening staph infections.”
Yikes.
