Thai PM and wife win costume prize at winter festival

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and his wife Naraporn Chan-o-cha were this week presented with a special award titled “Khu Kwan Jai Phetch” (diamond heart couple) for wearing the best Thai costumes while attending the royally initiated winter festival, Oon Ai Rak Klay Kwam Nao, at Bangkok’s Royal Plaza and Sanam Suea Pa.

On Tuesday, Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat presented special awards to Cabinet members who attended a February 14 event where they were asked to match their costumes to the theme of the festival, which features picturesque structures decorated with flowers.Commerce Deputy Minister Chutima Bunyapraphasara won the award titled “Suparpsatri Ngam Yang Thai Samai Ror 5” (Thai beautiful lady of King Rama V era), while Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam won the award “Suparpburut Rattanakosin Phaendin Ror 5” (Rattanakosin gentleman of King Rama V era).

Industry Minister Somchai Harnhirun and his wife Anchalee Harnhirun won the award titled “Ngodngam Rattanakosin Samai Apornthai Arayaniyom” (Rattanakosin era’s beautiful costume of popular Thai cloth), while Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and his wife Anurachanee Jatusripitak won the award titled “Khu Kwan Siam Samai Ngam Yang Thai Prayuk” (couple best adorning the applied Thai traditional costume).

The winter festival, which opened on February 8 and will run until March 11, features exhibitions about the life and great achievements of King Rama V and King Rama IX, and also reflects Thai lifestyles from the past until the present.
