A 13-year-old Thai girl remains in critical condition after participating in a drinking challenge for 1,000 baht at an ordination ceremony in Nakhon Ratchasima. The girl’s grandmother, 72-year-old Aui, filed a complaint against the man who coerced her into drinking excessive alcohol at Nong Boon Mak Police Station on June 10. The girl lost consciousness immediately and was rushed to Nong Boon Mak Hospital, later transferred to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital due to the severity of her condition.
Video evidence submitted by A’s relatives shows her and a 13-year-old boy drinking while a group of men cheered them on. Aui revealed that A typically attended ordination ceremonies to collect money scattered by monks, as her family of 13 relies on her support.
Witnesses reported that a man challenged A and her friend to drink half a bottle of alcohol for 1,000 baht, which led to her collapsing. The boy was heavily drunk but unharmed. The boy’s mother demanded the responsible man and his friends take accountability for the incident.
Police plan to summon everyone involved for questioning. Charges may include violations of the Child Protection Act, such as inducing inappropriate behavior, inviting children to harmful actions, and providing alcohol to minors. Penalties range from three months to three years in prison, fines up to 30,000 baht, or both. Additional charges may apply if the girl’s condition worsens or if she dies.
