Teacher Accused Of Sending Nudes And Having Sex With Student
An American teacher has been accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student in her car.
Lindsey M. Halstead, from East Bloomfield, New York, was arrested by police earlier this week after a male student claimed the former Waterloo High School teacher had sent him nudes.
According to court documents seen by the New York Post, the 29-year-old was charged on Tuesday with two counts of sexual misconduct and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
The teen – who can’t be named for legal reasons – is understood to have been interviewed by police on 6 May about the incident, which allegedly took place in November 2018.
He claimed Halstead contacted him via social media in September 2018 while she was working in the Midlakes Schools District. In his court statement, he said that after talking for a few weeks, she began sending him nude photos.
He told police that they planned to meet up, adding that Halstead picked him up from the library in Waterloo. They parked up behind the Hampton Inn in Seneca Falls and had sex in her car, he claimed.
Speaking to officers about how he felt at the time, the teenager said: “I was pretty quiet and I just said a few words.”
However, he said the former teacher kept trying to contact him and he was forced to block her number.
He told police: “At this point I was like, ‘This is weird, why is she still texting me?'”
According to superintendent Terri Bavis, Halstead was a teacher with the Waterloo Central School District from September 2014 until 2 February 2018.
In a statement, he said the school district was cooperating with police.
He said: “The safety and security of our students is of utmost importance and all reports of any kind are treated seriously.”
A statement from New York State Police said: “Halstead is accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old subject in the town of Seneca Falls.
“Halstead was previously employed by the Waterloo School District from September of 2014 through February 2018. She then worked for the Midlakes School District as a long term substitute teacher from February of 2018 through April of 2018 when she was terminated.”
Responding to questions about why they released Halstead’s photograph, police said they believed it could encourage other victims to come forward.
They added: “The investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the State Police in Waterloo at (315)-539-3530.”
