T20 World Cup: India Survive USA Scare to Reach Super 8s

India narrowly avoided an upset against co-hosts USA to secure their place in the Super 8s of the Men’s T20 World Cup, overcoming early losses to chase down 111 and win by seven wickets. Catch all the action live on Sky Sports this June.

India faced a significant challenge from the USA in their Group A match in New York. The USA, fresh off a historic win against Pakistan, had India struggling at 10-2 in the third over, chasing a target of 111. Virat Kohli was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Saurabh Netravalkar (2-18), a former India U-19 player turned engineer. Netravalkar also claimed captain Rohit Sharma (3) in his next over. However, a dropped catch of Suryakumar Yadav (50no) proved costly for the USA, as India eventually triumphed.

Rishabh Pant (18) was bowled by Ali Khan (1-21), putting India at 44-3. The turning point came in the 13th over when Suryakumar, dropped on 22, capitalized on his reprieve, scoring a half-century. Shivam Dube (29no) sealed the win with 10 balls to spare, securing India’s spot in the Super 8s.

The USA could still advance as runners-up if they beat Ireland in their final group game on Friday. A loss would give Pakistan or Ireland a chance to qualify, depending on their match on Sunday.

Earlier, India opted to bowl first, with Arshdeep Singh (4-9) starring by taking two early wickets, reducing the USA to 3-2. Steven Taylor (24) and Nitish Kumar (27) contributed valuable runs, leading the USA to a total of 110-8. Despite the low-scoring pitch, India’s experience and Suryakumar’s class ensured their victory.

India will play Canada on Saturday, while Pakistan’s match against Ireland on Sunday could determine the final standings if the USA loses to Ireland on Friday. All matches are scheduled for 3.30pm UK time and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Cricket.
