How Did Manchester United Do It?
For this big European fixture, the odds were stacked against Manchester United. They had no chance especially with nine players on sick notes and one in detention. Plus they were 2-0 down from the first leg at Old Trafford.
Sick Notes
Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sánchez
In Detention
Paul Pogba
United Off To A Flyer
Romelu Lukaku, two goals in each of his last two Premier League games, latched on to a poor back pass by PSG’s defender Thilo Kehrer, took the ball around keeper Gianluigi Buffon, and put United ahead after just two minutes. Exactly the kind of start United needed. But ten minutes later PSG, enjoying more possession than United, equalised when Juan Bernat came in from PSG’s left to score.
PSG Keep Giving
On 30 minutes Lukaku tucked in again to keep his current brace per game record intact. Rashford shot, from outside the box, should have been a simple routine save for Buffon. But the 41 year old Italian spilled it to present Lukaku with an unmissable opportunity. That could well be Buffon’s last chance with PSG.
PSG Dominate
PSG continued to dominate and with the aggregate score 3-2 in their favour, they knew they just had to keep United out. As the clock ticked down they were making a good job of that and seemed destined to make the quarterfinals.

United Receive Third Gift
This one cam from PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe who turned his back on a shot from Diogo Dalot. He also raised his arm which the ball hit. Eventually. with the help of VAR, United were awarded penalty which the ice cool Marcus Rashford converted. United had done it on away goals.

Neymar Unhappy
Neymar used social media to say:
“They put 4 people who know nothing about football to watch the VAR slow motion,” the Brazil international posted on his Instagram story. “There is no penalty. How can it be handball when his back is turned. Go f**k yourselves …”
Expert Opinion
Speaking after the match former Premier League referee Peter Walton defended the decision and insisted the referee had got it right.
“We called it straight away,” he told BT Sport.
“The way Kimpembe has gone up there, left his arm out, turned his back, and made himself bigger. This is exactly why VAR has been brought in. VAR has to decide if it’s in the area. For me, that’s a handball. He’s turned his back, not taken responsibility for his arm. It’s a penalty kick.”
