Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin stated that the government would reconsider the hours of operation of entertainment venues in order to enhance tourism and the local economy.
Mr Srettha stated that the administration was investigating possibilities to expand the hours of operation for pubs and bars in order to accommodate more tourists. He stated that, although having various advantages, the country is still falling short in terms of promoting tourist attractions and organizing world-class events.
Mr Srettha notes legislative changes that will allow entertainment venues to stay open later. However, he admits that operating 24 hours a day is not the solution because it might lead to social and security issues.
As a result, it was necessary to review whether the current closing time of 1am is sufficient to keep Thailand competitive in comparison to other cities in order for Thailand to become the region’s tourism hub.
Mr Srettha stated that the concept of extending the closing hour of entertainment venues will be explored, and that it should be implemented along with reforming the taxation system in order to improve Thailand.
The premier stated that he wanted the advantages and cons to be discussed, and that the parties involved should have frank discussions and make constructive recommendations.
Meanwhile, the operator of the entertainment industry is upbeat. According to Sanga Ruangwattanakul, head of the Khaosan Business Association, the proposal to extend the closing hour for nightclubs will benefit the economy and tourism, particularly overseas travelers returning to the country.
He also advocated that the government make festival activities permanent and held annually in order to build an identity and remembrance that can assist attract more tourists.
Mr Sanga stated that he personally believes that the best working hours for nightclubs, based on the tendencies of night owls, are those that remain open till 4 a.m.
Some people are concerned that the expanded operation hours may exacerbate the problem of drunk driving. Mr. Sanga believes that the problem is not dependent on operation hours because a few extra hours will not have a significant impact. He stated that it was up to each individual’s discipline and duty.
In terms of public opinion, most individuals, particularly those who reside near Pattaya’s entertainment establishments, believe that the longer operation hours will help stimulate the economy. However, some individuals are concerned about the drunken revelers’ loud noise and fights. They want the agencies involved to plan the response measures. They believe that remaining open till 3-4 a.m. is okay.
Longer hours, according to Thanawat Polvichai, rector of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, will assist the economy by boosting tourism and creating more jobs. The bad aspects were crime, but he was certain that the authorities could handle them. (TNA)
