Nurse pleads guilty over fatal breast surgery

A Chinese nurse has admitted her role in a botched boob job that claimed the life of her boss, Jean Huang.

Yueqiong Fu, who goes by the English name Caroline, pleaded guilty to recklessly administering a poison which endangered Ms Huang’s life, and providing false statements in an effort to hinder the police investigation.

Ms Huang died in hospital, three days after being injected with the anaesthetic Tramadol, inside the Chippendale beauty clinic in Sydney’s inner west.

She went into cardiac arrest and Ms Fu was unable to revive her.

Ms Fu was a qualified nurse in China and had completed a degree at University of Technology, Sydney but was not yet registered as a nurse in New South Wales because she still had to complete an English test.

She told the court that Ms Huang knew she wasn’t registered and hadn’t been involved in an operation before but still wanted her to assist the doctor with the procedure at the Medi Beauty clinic in Chippendale on August 30, 2017.

She said she was using “Chinese thinking” and claimed she just followed the doctor’s instructions, “Because when I was a nurse in china I just followed the doctor’s instructions,” she said.

She also told the court she initially lied to police about her involvement because she was scared she would get in trouble with her employer.

Ms Huang’s husband Weisi Fu gave a victim impact statement to the court, speaking of his sorrow and loss.

He said Jean had brought “light and hope” to his life and “I want to dedicate my full love to her forever”.

He sobbed as he said “I will miss the bit of living with my wife together, I still wish she can respond to me even just one time, but it is extravagant hopes.”

He said the only thing he can wish for now is a “reasonable punishment” for the person responsible.

Ms Fu said she feels deep remorse and regret and is “very sorry” for Ms Huang’s family.

Ms Fu will be sentenced in two weeks.

Although the offence carries a maximum sentence of ten years, her lawyers have argued that she should not go to jail or have a conviction recorded against her name.
