Manchester United is planning to construct a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 seats, inspired by the Los Angeles SoFi Arena, at an estimated cost of £2 billion. The project is expected to take approximately six years to complete.
However, the option to redevelop the existing Old Trafford stadium remains a possibility. The club’s stadium task force has agreed that building a new facility on the land surrounding the current stadium would be the most favorable solution.
The Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, chaired by Lord Coe and including prominent figures like Gary Neville and Andy Burnham, has conducted four meetings to discuss the future of the stadium.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe envisions creating a “Wembley of the north,” but it’s important to note that no definitive decision has been made yet. Redeveloping Old Trafford presents challenges, including a railway line located behind the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. Moreover, any construction would likely reduce the stadium’s capacity, leading to significant revenue loss and inconvenience for fans.
As it stands, Manchester United would not have an alternative venue to utilize during potential redevelopment.
