Police from Thailand’s Technology Crime Suppression Division arrested 14 people yesterday (Friday), for allegedly operating an illegal online gambling service.
Police also seized 14 computers and 15 smart phones during a raid on a house on Bang Khun Thian-Chai Talay Road, in Tha Kham sub-district of Bangkok.
Pol Maj-Gen Nithithorn Chintakanon, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said that the gang had hacked into the websites of numerous government agencies and added links to their online gambling site.
He said that about 50 state agency web pages had been hacked by the gang, adding that some of the suspects were offering betting on World Cup 2022 matches through their website.
He explained that the hackers targeting the Facebook accountsof state agencies because they are not closely monitored for gambling advertisements, which are supposed to be automatically blocked.
The officer claimed that police found the gang had about 200 million baht circulating through its bank accounts.
All 14 suspects have been charged with operating gambling services without a license.
