Driver survives pickup plunge

A pickup truck lost control and fell into a canal, drowning the driver. The mishap occurred on September 16 at Soi Suksomboon, an area of east Pattaya. A gray Mitsubishi pickup truck had gone off the road and into the canal, and responding emergency workers used cutting equipment to free the driver and passengers. Thankfully, the canal’s water level was not very high, so the vehicle could be seen from a distance; the water came up to the vehicle’s wheels at most.
A miracle allowed the pickup truck’s driver, Thawatchai Yamket, 41, to walk away from the crash unscathed. Thawatchai described the incident, saying that he was driving a pickup truck with a manual transmission. His careless mistake of shifting gears resulted in an abrupt acceleration of the automobile. He tried desperately to restore control, but the vehicle drifted off the road and into the canal nevertheless. Fortunately, the only serious injuries he sustained were shock and a pounding heart.
