David de Gea is on the brink of signing with a new club after officially leaving Manchester United. The Spanish goalkeeper has been a free agent since parting ways with United at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Upon announcing his departure from Old Trafford, De Gea expressed his gratitude to the fans, stating: “I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love over the last 12 years. We achieved a lot since Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. It was an honor to represent Manchester United—the biggest club in the world.”
He continued, “Now, it’s the right time to take on a new challenge and push myself in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart; it has shaped me and will never leave me.”
Since leaving the Red Devils, De Gea has been linked to various teams, including clubs in the Saudi Professional League, but no moves materialized, leaving the goalkeeper without a club for the 2023/24 season.
However, it was reported on Thursday that Serie A team Fiorentina was in discussions to sign De Gea. Later that evening, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on social media, “David de Gea to Fiorentina, here we go! A verbal agreement is in place for the former #MUFC goalkeeper. The contract is until June 2025 with an option for an additional year. Travel and medical appointments have been booked. The deal is facilitated by Spanish agents Jose Lorenzo and Jose Carlos, alongside Italian intermediaries from GG11 Agency.”
During his time with Manchester United, De Gea won numerous titles, including one Premier League title, one FA Cup, two League Cups, three FA Community Shields, and one UEFA Europa League trophy.
