A Chinese man claiming to flee for his life from a casino in Poipet was arrested on Thursday in Sa Kaew.
Police launched a morning manhunt leading to the arrest of Tang Xio Xoeng (not official spelling), 46, after being alerted by a team of Rangers patrolling the Aranyaprathet border near the Rong Klua Market.
The team told police that they saw a man climbing over the wall before running into the market and disappearing. Police searched the market but did not find the man, but later tracked him down in downtown Aranyaprathet district. He lacked an identification card or travelling documents.
He testified via an interpreter that he lived in Henan and was invited by friends to gamble at a casino in Poipet, where he was defrauded and forced to sign a promissory note for about Bt1.5 million to the casino.
Xio claimed that the casino had forced him to contact relatives to pay the sum before releasing him. He said he fled when guards were not watching.
Police doubted his story and detained him on charge of unlawful entry. The Chinese embassy will be contacted to conduct an interrogation.
