Chelsea has officially signed goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for £20.7 million on a seven-year contract.
The 22-year-old Dane made 37 appearances for Villarreal last season, establishing himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
“This move is a dream come true,” Jorgensen expressed. “I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and start playing with my new teammates.”
Jorgensen is expected to compete for Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper position with Robert Sanchez.
Originally born in Sweden, Jorgensen represented the country at various youth levels before switching his allegiance to Denmark Under-21s, qualifying through his father’s heritage. He joined Villarreal’s youth academy at 15 and progressed to make his senior debut for the B team in October 2020.
Having made his La Liga debut in January 2023, Jorgensen has now flown to the United States to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour. The Blues have three matches remaining, and he could see action against Club America, Manchester City, or Real Madrid before returning home next week.
Chelsea’s Premier League campaign kicks off at home against reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, August 18, at 16:30 BST.
