Bournemouth settled for a point after VAR denied them a stoppage-time winner in their 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at the Vitality Stadium.
Dango Ouattara headed home Lewis Cook’s corner, but after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for allegedly using his arm to guide the ball over the line, much to the frustration of Cherries boss Andoni Iraola. “I’m not against the referee because he gave the goal and didn’t even have the chance to review it. If he had, I’m sure he would have upheld it,” Iraola said after the match. “The ball never touches Dango’s skin, and at that minute, it was obviously three points for us.”
Newcastle began the match on the front foot but struggled to maintain their momentum as Bournemouth’s pressing game took effect. The hosts gained the lead in the 37th minute when Antoine Semenyo set up Marcus Tavernier, who scored with a rolling finish.
In the second half, Newcastle found an equalizer in the 77th minute through Anthony Gordon, who converted Harvey Barnes’ accurate cross.
Bournemouth thought they had clinched victory in the 93rd minute, but VAR intervened to overturn Ouattara’s goal, leaving the home crowd in dismay.
“We should have won the game,” said Iraola. “I’m very frustrated because my players deserved more.”
Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reflected, “We feel hard done by, but we take the point.”
Newcastle’s Eddie Howe acknowledged the contentious VAR decision, stating, “I initially hadn’t seen anything wrong with the goal. Both teams created chances, and a draw was fair.”
With this result, Newcastle moved to fifth in the Premier League table while Bournemouth dropped to 14th, having drawn their second consecutive match.
