On January 24th, 1972 non-league Hereford pulled off a giant-killing 2-2 draw at the home of tier one side Newcastle United. In terms of rankings, Newcastle were ranked around 84 places higher than Hereford.

On a quagmire of a pitch a man, not that many people had heard of before called Ronnie Radford, fired in an unstoppable shot past Newcastle’s goalkeeper Willie McFull. This happened in the 85th minute and equalised Malcolm MacDonald’s opener in the 82nd minute for Newcastle.

The signs are not good.
• Not only are City currently rated the best team in England they are also in number one spot in Europe according to bookmakers who make them favourites to win the Champions League.
• Premier League managers do tend to make changes for the FA Cup and give fringe players a run-out. But City’s fringe are all top internationals.
• In domestic cup games, City are knocking teams out of sight hitting Rotherham for seven, Burton for nine, and Burnley for five. They are brutal and were again when knocking Chelsea for six last week.
Newport Signs.
• Location. 40 miles from Hereford.
• Ranking. Around 83 places lower than City.
• Pitch. It might not be the quagmire that greeted Newcastle but it will be different to what City are used to.
• Weather. Doesn’t it always rain in Wales?
Prediction
Once upon a time in, as torrential rain lashed down onto a football pitch in South Wales, lowly Newport County shocked the football world by beating Premier League giants Manchester City… There are similarities between Newport and Hereford and this really would be FA Cup Magic.
