Attempted Facebook Live suicide, dramatic rescue

A young woman live streaming her intended suicide on Facebook was rescued from the brink as she threatened to jump from a building in Muang district on Monday night.

The 23-year-old, whose name was withheld, was sitting in shadow on a ledge near the top of a 3-storey building housing a tutoring school in Muang municipality when police and rescue volunteers arrived at the scene around 9pm.

The woman, who works at the school, kept crying and saying that nobody understood her, as she live streamed on Facebook. Her friends at the school had tried unsuccessfully to console her, police said.

As she showed no sign of abandoning her suicide plan, rescuers prepared a giant air cushion to break her fall and told nosy bystanders to keep away.

A team of disaster prevention and rescue workers went inside the building while another team in front of the building talked with her to divert her attention.

The rescue team used this opportunity to grab her from behind and pull her inside the building, police said.

Her colleagues told police the woman often complained that she had not been able to find steady employment and financial stability since graduating, and she felt her parents were sad and disappointed in her.

She had earlier received treatment for depression.

After being rescued, the woman was taken to Ratchaburi Hospital
