Police reported the arrest of an American man accused of assaulting a Thai woman and robbing her of cash and valuables last month in the Muang district of an island province. Ali Mikail, 36, was apprehended by immigration officers in the car park of Central Phuket shopping mall in tambon Wichit.
The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed alleging that a foreigner had assaulted a Thai woman and stolen money and valuables from her in tambon Chalong on the night of April 24. Local authorities collaborated with Phuket Immigration to track down the suspect.
On Friday, around 11pm, officers spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description in the shopping mall car park. Upon checking his passport, it was revealed that he had entered Thailand on February 17 of the same year. A subsequent body search yielded no illegal items. The man was then taken to Chalong police station for further interrogation.
The victim was contacted and confirmed the suspect’s identity and his involvement in the assault and theft. Police gathered additional evidence against him, leading to the filing of theft charges. He remained in police custody pending legal proceedings.
