Man jumps into Saen Saeb Canal to flee police

A motorcyclist had to be rescued from Saen Saeb Canal in Bangkok after he mysteriously tried to flee from police although no illegal items were found on him.

The Hua Mak police station sought help from the Siam Ruam Jai Pu In Foundation to pull the man out of water at 4am.

The motorcyclist was later identified as Chatchawal Sapsin, 31.

Pol Captain Yossawat Ariyanavasrikul, deputy inspector of the Hua Mak police station, said he and five other policemen were manning a road checkpoint on outbound Rama IX road in front of KT Apartment in Bang Kapi district when Chatchawal and a pillion rider were riding down from a flyover.

Yossawat said the motorcycle turned back against the traffic about 50 metres before it reached the checkpoint, so patrol police chased them.

Yossawat said Chatchawal later got off his bike and left a bag before jumping into the canal, while the unidentified pillion rider managed to run away along the canal bank.

Chatchawal was found floating in the middle of canal and appeared exhausted. He was sent to the Nopparat Ratchathani Hospital after rescue. Police checked but found no illegal items in the bag. Police have yet to interrogate him to discover why he tried to flee.
