The UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls (WGDAWG) held a press conference following its inaugural visit to Thailand, invited by the Thai government. Representatives Heina Lu and Ivana Krstić reviewed Thailand’s progress and challenges in advancing gender equality. Their discussions took place across Bangkok, Mae Sot, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai, focusing on the experiences of women and girls facing multiple forms of discrimination.
The report commended Thailand’s strides in improving women’s rights, particularly in education, healthcare, and employment. However, concerns were raised regarding gaps in policy enforcement that continue to impede gender equality. Krstić drew attention to the growing impact of technology on sexual violence, including cyberbullying and harmful data exposure, underscoring the need for enhanced protections.
The group also recommended the decriminalization of sex work to ensure equal access to healthcare and the integration of victim support services. Despite ongoing efforts, the report noted that a lack of adequate staffing at support centers remains a significant barrier to providing equal access to essential services.
