A surprising video has emerged depicting boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk being led away in handcuffs at Krakow airport in Poland.
Reports on social media suggest that the 37-year-old boxer was detained, prompting concern among fans and followers. The video shows Usyk being escorted by officers, sparking reactions from his wife and camp manager.
Usyk’s wife, Kateryna, reassured fans on social media, stating, “Everything is fine. Oleksandr will explain everything later. Nothing criminal, goodnight everyone.” Meanwhile, his camp manager, Serge Lapin, added, “Don’t worry, everything’s fine. The customs control service is neglecting its duties.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also addressed the situation on social media, confirming Usyk’s release after the detention. He stated, “I spoke with Oleksandr Usyk on the phone after he was detained. I was disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen and champion.”
Zelensky instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Internal Affairs to investigate the incident further. He reassured fans that “everything is fine, our champion has been released,” sharing a photo of Usyk with the Consul General in Krakow shortly after his release.
Usyk later took to social media to clarify the incident, saying, “Dear Friends. A misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved. Thanks to all who were concerned, and to Ukrainian diplomats for their efficient support. I respect the Polish police for fulfilling their duties regardless of height, weight, reach, and titles.”
The boxer has not fought since his impressive victory over Tyson Fury, where he claimed the WBC world heavyweight title, becoming the undisputed champion. However, he had to relinquish the IBF title, which was awarded to Daniel Dubois after he won the interim belt against Filip Hrgovic.
Usyk is scheduled to defend his WBA (super), WBC, and WBO world titles in a rematch against Fury in Saudi Arabia on December 21. Additionally, he plans to travel to London this week to attend the IBF world title fight between Anthony Joshua and Dubois at Wembley Stadium.
