Surat Thani Immigration Police have arrested a 62-year-old Australian suspect, wanted in connection with 13 sexual assault cases and 2 rapes in Australia. The man, identified as Mr. Helio, had been hiding in Thailand, intending to spend his retirement on the island of Koh Phangan, known for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere. However, his criminal past caught up with him, thwarting his retirement plans.
Helio was apprehended on September 12 for overstaying his visa. According to immigration records, he entered Thailand on June 16, 2024, under a visa exemption, allowing him to stay until July 15. He then applied for a 30-day extension for tourism, which expired on August 14. When investigators found no evidence of his departure, they tracked him to a resort in Koh Phangan, where he was discovered overstaying his visa. Helio claimed he had planned to apply for a retirement visa.
Upon further investigation, authorities uncovered an Interpol Blue Notice for Helio. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that he was wanted for multiple sexual assault and rape charges dating back to 2017.
After processing his visa violation at the Koh Phangan Police Station, local authorities will coordinate with Australia for his extradition.
