Tyson Fury has made it clear that he has no plans to continue boxing past 2029, signaling a significant shift in the heavyweight division as it prepares for the next generation of fighters.
The Gypsy King recently lost his undefeated crown in a dramatic fashion against Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight unification bout. This defeat has prompted questions about Fury’s future in the sport and whether he has the motivation to continue.
A rematch with Usyk is scheduled for later this year, with Fury aiming to reclaim his status as world champion. By the time he faces Usyk again, Fury will be 36 years old. He has flirted with retirement in the past, notably announcing in 2022 that he would retire on his 34th birthday, only to make a swift return to the ring.
Fury appears set to continue fighting for at least a few more years, with a highly anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua potentially on the horizon for 2025. However, the former WBC heavyweight champion has no plans to extend his career much longer. “I can’t see myself hanging around for the next five years. Never mind 20 years,” Fury stated.
“I’ve given a lot to this game. I gave all my youth, all my teenage years, all my young adult life. I’ve got to have some time to be me, really. All the things I’ve done and all the accolades and all the money I’ve earned, I’ve got to have time to enjoy it. It’s only a short life, isn’t it? We’re here today, gone tomorrow.”
Fury’s eventual retirement will leave a significant void in the heavyweight division, especially with Usyk and Joshua also nearing the end of their careers. Among the younger heavyweights, Daniel Dubois stands out as the highest-ranked boxer under 30, having already faced Usyk in a controversial title shot in 2023. Dubois’ next challenge will be against IBF mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic later this summer.
American Jared Anderson is also viewed as a future heavyweight star, boasting an impressive record of 17 wins with 15 by knockout. Meanwhile, Moses Itauma is seen as the most promising teenage talent, with many, including Fury, backing him to become a future world champion.
