Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Friday that he did not agree with letting people use weed for fun. However, he said that medical use of cannabis would still be allowed under his government.
“Medical cannabis will be the policy for cannabis. “I don’t agree with that about recreational use,” Mr. Sretha, who is also the finance minister, told reporters.
The weed business in Thailand is expected to be worth up to US$1.2 billion (42.9 billion baht) in the next few years. Since the drug’s use and cultivation were made legal last year, thousands of new businesses have opened up.
This week, Mr. Srettha announced a number of economic policies that are meant to boost purchasing and spending in the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia.
“This is a targeted policy, and domestic spending will go up a lot,” the former business magnate said, referring to his signature policy of giving all Thais a digital wallet with 10,000 baht ($282.09) in it.
On Thursday, the prime minister said that the government’s digital wallet project will use the Krungthai Bank Pao Tang mobile app, which will be combined with blockchain technology.
