West Ham United progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a dramatic late win over fellow Premier League side Bournemouth at London Stadium.
In the 88th minute, with the match heading for penalties, West Ham found a fortunate winner when Mohammed Kudus’ shot deflected off Jarrod Bowen and slipped past Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.
Bournemouth’s coaching staff believed the goal should have been disallowed for handball, but without the video assistant referee (VAR) system in use, the goal stood, much to their frustration. Andoni Iraola’s side had already faced controversy over a VAR handball decision in their recent 1-1 draw with Newcastle, denying Dango Ouattara a potential late winner.
At London Stadium, Bournemouth may feel aggrieved as they exit the competition. They had the better chances throughout the match, including Marcus Tavernier hitting the post with a well-placed free-kick and forcing a good save from West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who also denied Ouattara’s clever flick.
West Ham struggled in the opening half hour, not registering a shot on target until 41 minutes in. Niclas Füllkrug, making his first start for the Hammers following his £27 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund, directed a tame header at Neto. He later set up Crysencio Summerville, but the Dutchman missed the target.
As the match approached a penalty shootout, Bowen had a chance pushed wide by Neto, but moments later, West Ham claimed the controversial victory.
Following the match, the draw for the third round took place, with West Ham set for an away trip to Liverpool in September.
