Unregistered migrants face crackdown starting July 1

A crackdown on unregistered migrant workers began on Sunday, after the registration deadline for migrants from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia ended on Saturday.

Senior immigration police in the South convened a meeting on Saturday to draw up clear guidelines for the crackdown.

Unregistered workers will be fined between Bt5,000 and Bt50,000 before being deported. They will also be barred from working in Thailand for two years.

Pol Maj-General Jessada Yaisoon, who heads the Immigration Police Region 6, said the crackdown would begin from Sunday onward in response to the government policy.
