The second season of the incredible The Umbrella Academy has only been on Netflix for a few days and it’s already racked up rave reviews.
Review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes has listed the second instalment of the epic series at an impressive 91 per cent for the audience score.
That’s much better than the first season’s audience score of 85 per cent, which was still very well received by viewers around the world.
The show is based on the comic book series created and written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics.
Starring the likes of Ellen Page, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman and Mary J. Blige, the first series revolved around a band of ‘estranged siblings with extraordinary powers’ after they are reunited in the wake of their father’s death – a mystery they must solve together.
In the final episode, the family travelled back in time to stop the apocalypse, with the opening scene of the new season dropping us right into the heart of the action in the 1960s – an era which doesn’t appear to be quite as groovy as film and TV have previously taught us to expect.
Since the second season dropped last Friday (July 31), critics have been praising it for diving deeper into the world of the Academy.
The Observer’s Brendan Katz wrote: “The Umbrella Academy is what you get when you mix Wes Anderson with Matthew Vaughn, stuff them full of Red Bull and Adderall, and give them a Spotify Premium subscription. Yes, that’s a compliment.”
Vox’s Alex Abad-Santos added: “In its best moments, The Umbrella Academy’s second season manages to balance both humanity and superheroics without sacrificing either.”
Uproxx’s Kimberly Ricci said: “The twists are bigger, the impending apocalypse is bigger, and most importantly, the feels (the laughter, the tears, and everything in between) are bigger.”
If you are a fan of the second season (we won’t judge you for binging through the 10 episodes over the weekend) then you could be in for a treat.
Tom Hopper (Luther) and Robert Sheehan (Klaus) both told LADbible they were up for a trilogy.
Hopper told us: “Yeah, we love hanging around in this world. It’s a lot of fun. And we all love working with each other. It’s quite a gift to have the kind of show we have really because we have a showrunner [Steve Blackman] who’s very collaborative.”
“So it’s very freeing as an actor. And it’s great to have that source material to see where we could go, what we could do. As you saw from the first two seasons, there are influences from the comic, absolutely.”
Sheehan added: “I’d love to do one. A graphic novel is pure comic escapism. There’s oodles of time travel, and powers, and it’s very, very earthly – whereas I think Steve’s intuition is always to bring it back and make it more make the characters’ journeys.
“Steve started talking about, well, maybe one more. You’re always talking about seasons, you know, from season one, you’re always talking about where the show could go. So yeah, I mean, there’s always conversations happening about future seasons.
“I’m always hatching pipe dreams and sending emails to Steve.”
