Lee Carsley, who is set to lead England in upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, has been dealt a blow with the withdrawal of three players from the squad.
Last week, Carsley selected his first squad since taking over as the interim manager, replacing Gareth Southgate. The 50-year-old made significant decisions, leaving out notable players like Marcus Rashford, Kyle Walker, James Maddison, and Adam Wharton while including Angel Gomes, Noni Madueke, and Morgan Gibbs-White.
However, as England prepares for matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins, and Phil Foden have all been forced to withdraw.
On Tuesday evening, the English Football Association released a statement: “Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins, and Phil Foden will not participate in the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The squad reported to St. George’s Park, but following assessments, Palmer and Watkins have returned to their clubs to continue rehabilitation for ongoing issues. Foden is ruled out due to illness.”
Ahead of his first matches in charge, Carsley expressed his pride: “It’s a real proud moment for my family and me. The last few weeks have been hectic as I try to grasp the magnitude of the job and attend as many games as possible. The expectation is exciting, and I feel privileged. I’m eager to meet up with the players and hope to put my own stamp on things while acknowledging what has been achieved in the past. I can’t wait for the game in Dublin; it will be a great occasion.”
