Thailand Proposes Child Protection Act Amendment

Under the leadership of Minister Varawut Silpa-archa, Thailand's Social Development and Human Security Ministry is gearing up to propose a revision to the Child Protection

Under the leadership of Minister Varawut Silpa-archa, Thailand’s Social Development and Human Security Ministry is gearing up to propose a revision to the Child Protection Act to the Cabinet this month. The proposed amendments are aimed at underlining the pivotal roles of families and local communities in safeguarding children.

After a recent meeting of the National Child Protection Committee, Varawut announced that the draft of the revised Child Protection Act has been authorized and is slated for Cabinet approval within the current month. The implementation of the updated act will commence promptly upon Cabinet endorsement.

Varawut emphasized the urgent need to modernize the longstanding Child Protection Act to better address contemporary societal needs. The revised version of the act will prioritize increased engagement from families and local communities to nurture a safe environment for children. This includes a focus on accident prevention and the introduction of preventative tools and measures. The minister cautioned that family and community members failing to adhere to the new regulations could face penalties.

Moreover, the meeting saw the green light for the National Plan of Action for Child Protection 2023 to 2027, a strategy aligned with both the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Thailand’s 5×5 policy for addressing population concerns, as reported by Bangkok Post.

Varawut expressed confidence that the proposed amendment will establish a robust regulatory framework for safeguarding children’s well-being, thereby facilitating their holistic development. He believes this will further contribute to the economic and social progress of the nation.
