There were record highs of 191 more Covid-19 fatalities and 21,379 new cases over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Friday morning.
There were 20,895 cases in the general population and 484 among prison inmates.
Over the past 24 hours, 22,172 Covid-19 patients were diagnosed recovered and were discharged from hospitals
Since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began, there have been 685,821 Covid-19 patients, 468,478 of whom have recovered.
Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 714,684 Covid-19 cases, 495,904 of whom recovered.
The death toll was at 5,760 in the third wave and 5,854 from the beginning of the pandemic early last year.
The previous high of daily Covid-19 cases was at 20,920 on Thursday and the earlier record high of new daily fatalities was at 188 on Wednesday.
The Department of Disease Control reported in the afternoon that the 191 new fatalities were 21-104 years old and 123, or 64%, of them were 60 years old and over. Of the deaths, 187 were Thais, three were Myanmar and one was Japanese. Two died at home in Chachoengsao and Ubon Ratchathani.
Eighty-five of the new deaths either lived in or visited outbreak areas, 50 caught the virus from colleagues and minders and 40 got it from family members.
Bangkok logged 100 new fatalities while its adjacent provinces had 23 more deaths – nine in Samut Sakhon, eight in Nakhon Pathom and six in Samut Prakan.
The South had 19 new deaths – six each in Narathiwat and Pattani, three in Phatthalung, two in Yala and one each in Ranong and Surat Thani.
The Northeast reported 17 more deaths – seven in Roi Et, three in Nakhon Ratchasima, two each in Nong Khai and Ubon Ratchathani and one each in Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Phanom and Yasothon.
Northern provinces had 10 more deaths – five in Tak, four in Nakhon Sawan and one in Sukhothai.
Central plain provinces recorded 22 new fatalities – six in Chon Buri, four in Kanchanaburi, three each in Chachoengsao and Nakhon Nayok, two in Prachin Buri and one each in Trat, Phetchaburi, Rayong and Sa Kaeo.
The 21,379 new cases included 20,885 local infections and 10 imported cases. Of the local infections, 16,812 were confirmed at hospitals and 4,073 via mass testing.
Bangkok logged 4,700 new cases, followed by 1,355 in Samut Sakhon, 1,336 in Samut Prakan, 1,325 in Chon Buri, 716 in Nonthaburi, 552 in Pathum Thani, 527 in Chachoengsao, 476 in Nakhon Pathom, 427 in Saraburi and 358 in Ubon Ratchathani.
Greater Bangkok recorded 9,135 new cases and 123 more fatalities. Four southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala had 989 new cases and 14 new fatalities while 67 other provinces reported 10,761 new cases and 53 more deaths. The figures excluded data from prisons.
Prachuap Khiri Khan had a new cluster of 64 cases at a canned pineapple factory in Sam Roi Yot district. Ratchaburi had a new cluster of 40 cases at a plant company in Muang district.
Samut Sakhon had a new cluster of 16 cases at a steel casting factory in Muang district. Chon Buri had a new cluster of 17 cases at a wheel tube factory in Muang district. Ranong had a new cluster of 15 cases at a construction company in Pluak Daeng district.
The 10 imported cases were from the United Kingdom (1), Germany (1), Israel (2), Myanmar (2 Thais and 1 Myanmar who sneaked in) and Malaysia (3 illegal returnees).
On Thursday, 212,926 received treatment for Covid-19 at hospitals. Of them, 4,999 suffered lung inflammation and 1,038 were dependent on ventilators.
Global Covid-19 cases rose by 704,811 in 24 hours to 201.69 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 10,392 to 4.28 million. The United States had the most cases at 36.30 million, up 120,945, and the most deaths at 631,879, up 559. Thailand ranked 39th globally for its 714,684 accumulated cases.
