After being denied last week by the Election Commission (EC) due to the lack of cabinet agreement, the application to fund the program will be resubmitted to the EC for review.
In response to numerous public complaints about extremely high electricity bills during the hot season, the subsidy program was created.
Anucha Burapachaisri, a government spokesman, stated that the subsidy is intended for homes that use no more than 300 units of power per month.
For homes using little more than 150 units per month from May through August, the fuel tariff (FT) fee will be reduced under the plan from 91.19 satang per unit to 89.80 satang per unit. The FT charge will be reduced from 91.90 satang/unit for electricity use of 151-300 units/month to 64.80 satang/unit. The FT fee for use above 500 units is 91.19 satang/unit.
According to Anucha, the amount of the subsidy for these categories of energy consumers will be 6.954 billion baht, which will cover 18.32 million houses, or 78.42% of all families.
The remaining funds, totaling 3.510 billion baht, would be used as an emergency measure for homes served by EGAT substations and the Metropolitan and Provincial Electricity Authorities of Thailand (MPEA) during the month of May.
Each of the 23.4 million households in this category will receive a 150 baht subsidy for the month of May only.
