Yasuchin Supapipat, 75, was trying to collect a passenger from the homes opposite the canal in Chachoengsao when he made the error.

He edged his way across the walkway but the taxi’s wheels slipped – leaving the vehicle hanging perilously close to the water.

Red-faced Yasuchin clambered from the car and called the emergency services who turned up with a toe rope to pull his car to safety.

Yasuchin said: ”I was driving across very slowly and checking that the car was safe. But then I felt the wheel on the left side fall off the bridge.”

Rescue workers spent 30 minutes retrieving the yellow and green cab, using a jack to lift it back onto the track.

Yasuchin added: ”I’ll wait on the road next time and they can walk to me. I’m thankful for everyone who helped.”
