Rafael Nadal Suffers First-Round Defeat to Alexander Zverev at French Open

Rafael Nadal, the fourteen-time French Open champion, was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the first round at Roland Garros, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. This marks the first time in Nadal’s career that he has lost two consecutive clay-court matches and failed to advance past the first round at the French Open. Despite showing flashes of his top form, the 37-year-old Spaniard was overpowered by Zverev.

Nadal’s defeat was witnessed by a supportive crowd, including family, friends, and rivals. Although he did not confirm any farewells before the match, Nadal hinted that this could be his last appearance at Roland Garros. He expressed gratitude to the crowd, acknowledging the possibility of retirement but leaving the door open for a potential return for the Olympics.

Alexander Zverev, who previously retired due to an ankle injury when facing Nadal in the 2022 semi-finals, became only the third man to defeat Nadal at Roland Garros, following Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling. Zverev praised Nadal, calling it an honor to play against him.

In other news, British No. 1 Cameron Norrie and Harriet Dart were both knocked out in the first round. Norrie lost to Russian Pavel Kotov in a five-set match, while Dart was defeated by Czech 27th seed Linda Noskova. Britain’s hopes in singles now rest with Katie Boulter and Dan Evans, who play their first-round matches on Tuesday.

Italian world No. 2 Jannik Sinner advanced to the second round, defeating American Christopher Eubanks. Sinner, who recently recovered from a hip injury, showed strong form and expressed his happiness to be back on the court. Djokovic, aiming to defend his title, faces French wild card Pierre-Hugues Herbert in his first-round match on Tuesday.
