Protesters arrested and over 100 motorcycles seized

Police have apprehended 48 demonstrators and impounded 122 motorcycles in connection with the tempestuous rally on Tuesday calling for the removal of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha from office.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau said on Wednesday that 33 adults and 15 minors were arrested during or at the end of the rally. Most were detained in Din Daeng, Phaya Thai and Pathumwan districts. Five were arrested in Taling Chan district.

Four ping-pong bombs and some knives had been found during the arrests, according to the city police.

The charges against them ranged from breaching the emergency decree’s ban on gatherings of more than five people to damaging state property, including police traffic  control sites.

Police would trace the owners of the other seized motorcycles and arrest them, the police statement said.

Nine police were injured, one of them seriously, the statement said. The number of  demonstrators hurt and the extent of their injuries was not known.

The rally on Tuesday was organised by the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration.
