Pope Francis Remains in "Critical" Condition After Respiratory Crisis

Pope Francis’s health continues to be classified as “critical” following a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis” earlier on Saturday, according to a statement from the Vatican.

The 88-year-old pontiff is reportedly “more unwell than yesterday” and has required blood transfusions due to a low platelet count associated with anemia. The Vatican confirmed that, while he is alert and resting in his armchair, he is reliant on a “high flow” of oxygen, and his prognosis remains cautious.

Being treated for pneumonia affecting both lungs, Pope Francis is currently hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. This situation marks a significant development, as this assessment is the most detailed yet regarding his condition, though it notably refrains from offering a prognosis.

The Pope was first admitted to the hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. Due to a history of lung infections, including pleurisy and a previous lung surgery at age 21, he is particularly vulnerable to respiratory issues.

During his 12-year tenure as head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has been hospitalized multiple times, including for bronchitis in March 2023.

As news of his condition raises concern among Catholics worldwide, the Vatican has initiated daily health updates to maintain transparency. Despite his health challenges, the Pope was not expected to appear in public for prayer with pilgrims for the second consecutive week.

Well-wishers have been leaving candles, flowers, and letters outside Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, while the atmosphere outside St. Peter’s Basilica has remained quiet. Locals expressed their worry for the Pope, with one Italian noting, “We feel very close to the Pope, here in Rome. We saw the latest news, and we are worried.”
