Pattaya City is set to welcome a new monorail line, which, according to a recent study, will significantly enhance the coastal city’s public transport system and contribute to its economic development.
Dubbed the Red Line, the monorail system will feature ten stations and span 17.37 kilometers. A feasibility study presented at Tuesday’s public hearing—the second such hearing for this project—outlined these details.
The meeting was conducted by a group of consultant companies responsible for designing the new electric rail project and conducting an environmental impact assessment. Many local business owners attended to provide feedback, showing a keen interest in the new line.
According to the report, Pattaya’s Red Line monorail route will start at Thappraya Intersection, proceed along Thap Phraya Road and Jomtien Second Road until reaching Jomtien Intersection, then turn left onto Chaiyaphruek 1 Road, enter Chaiyaphruek 2 Road, and continue to the Eastern National Sports Training Centre.
The monorail style was chosen for its minimal traffic impact and suitability for the city’s tourism context. However, the report noted that these benefits come with higher construction and maintenance costs.
Each station on the line is designed to be about 1 km apart. The study also identified the public-private partnership (PPP) model as the most suitable investment format for this project.
