Lyn-brand couple charged with fatal negligence

The husband and wife behind Lyn-brand weight-loss products were on Sunday charged with colluding in the contamination of a food product with potentially harmful effects and negligence leading to death.

Deputy national police chief Pol General Weerachai Songmetta said conviction on the first charge could bring up to three years’ imprisonment and a Bt60,000 fine and on the second 10 years in jail and a Bt200,000 fine.

Lyn products were allegedly found to contain the appetite suppressant Sibutramine and the laxative Bisacodyl.

A 31-year-old Kanchanaburi woman who took the pills died on March 28, allegedly of Sibutramine-triggered acute heart failure.

Arrest warrants were approved on Saturday for Panchana Rattanaprasit, 47, and his wife Pimlapat Ekakarin, 41.

They were picked up the next day while driving towards Bang Saen and taken to face charges, Weerachai said.

He said the couple admitted ordering the manufacture of the products for sale but denied adding Sibutramine.

Police are planning a warrant search of a facility in Tambon Ban Suan, Muang Chon Buri, where the couple said they stored the products.
